CREWS MAKING GOOD PROGRESS IN PEND D'OREILLE

CASTLEGAR - Crews from the Ministry of Forests and Range and the Colville National Forest have now contained 30 percent of the Pend D'oreille Fire. Cool and wet weather has not only allowed crews to make good progress, but it has also prevented the fire from showing significant growth for the last two days.

Today, there are 350 fire fighters continuing work on this fire, including 200 U.S. fire fighters Crews are being supported by 54 support staff, 8 helicopters, 50 pieces of heavy equipment, and air tankers are available when needed.

The fire is still 3969 hectares or 9803 acres in size and is not expected to show much growth today. A timeline has been set for Canada to turn the portion of the fire in U.S. back over to the Colville National Forest on Thursday August 22. The Colville National Forest plans on keeping crews in the area to continue mop up and monitoring the portion of the fire in the U.S.

The Ministry of Forests and Range Southeast Fire Centre encompasses the area extending from the U.S. border in the south to Mica Dam in the north and from the Okanagan Highlands or Monashee Mountains in the west to the B.C./Alberta border in the east. This includes all of the Arrow-Boundary, Kootenay Lake, Rocky Mountain and Columbia Forest Districts.

The Colville National Forest is located in Ferry, Stevens, and Pend Oreille Counties in Washington.
