Wet Weather Arrives
Incident: Cascade Complex Wildland Fire
Released: 9/23/2007
The Johnson Creek Remote Automated Weather Station (RAWS), recorded 1.5 inches of rain last night and 4 inches of snow fell at Landmark. This was described as a season ending event by Fire Behavior Analysts familiar with burning conditions in this part of Idaho.
Because of the significant rain and the wet heavy snow Incident Commander Tom Suwyn said; "We don't want to tear up the roads with traffic until things dry out a little more and we don't want anyone to get hurt by being in a hurry at this point, patience will be the guideline today."
The areas impacted by the Cascade Complex Fire have undergone various degrees of fire intensity from unburned, to lightly burned, and in some cases to heavily burned. There are some areas that will remain unstable, and the recent moisture will add to the instability causing debris to impact roads. As soon as conditions will safely allow the roads and closed areas will be reopened by the Boise National Forest.
The Warm Lake Road is currently open to the public from Hwy 55 at Cascade to near the Big Creek Summit area. Road Construction is underway so travelers can expect heavy truck traffic on that road. Forest 409 Road is also open to Railroad Pass.
A map of the Closure is posted on www.Inciweb.org, and www.fs.fed.us/idahofires, Additional information is available at Cascade Fire Information (208) 382-3202, Cascade Ranger District (208) 382-7400.
More than 400 firefighters continue to manage the 302,385 acre wildfire burning 27 miles east of Cascade, ID. The fire remains at 28% containment.
