Lightning Ignites New Fires
Boise, ID -Several small new fires were started by lightning strikes yesterday on the Boise National Forest. Two of the fires were ignited southeast of Lowman and have been kept to a few acres with initial attack. Some rain was received over the Forest, but it was not widespread. Now that the weather is in a warming and drying trend for a few days, it is possible that smoldering lightning starts could catch fire and turn into a large fire quickly.
Visitors to the Forest this Labor Day weekend are being asked to do their part by observing the Stage 2 Fire Restrictions in effect. Under these restrictions, all campfires, open flames, sheepherder stoves and Dutch ovens are prohibited. Stoves fueled by propane, white gas or LPG are allowed. Smoking outside an enclosed vehicle or building and operating motorized vehicles off designated roads and trails are also not permitted.
Cascade Complex Update Total: 249,599 acres, 26% contained
Monumental Fire - 200,524 acres, Riordan Fire - 49,076 acres
Clouds covered the fire area for most of the day yesterday. Relative humidity remained high and helped to minimize fire activity. Fire in the Profile Creek area between Yellow Pine and Big Creek moved slowly north/northeast. Helicopters were used to deliver water drops to the area to control spread. Crews in the Warm Lake and Paradise areas continue to clear trees from roadways and rehabilitating dozer lines. Night crews continue to patrol the Yellow Pine, Landmark and Warm Lake areas for structure protection.
Resources: 654 personnel, 12 crews, 9 aircraft, 32 engines
