Another Red Flag Day

Boise, ID - A Red Flag Warning is once again in effect all afternoon and evening on the Boise National Forest. Widely scattered thunderstorms are expected to be a mix of wet and dry. The dry thunderstorms along with gusty winds and extremely dry fuels warrant the continuation of the Red Flag Warning. Frequent lightning strikes could easily start new fires, and bring rapid increases in fire size to on-going fires. These conditions may present a very dangerous situation for firefighters working on the Cascade Complex and other area fires. Visitors to the Forest this Labor Day weekend are being asked to do their part by observing the Stage 2 Fire Restrictions in effect. Under these restrictions, all campfires and open flames are prohibited. While this includes sheepherder stoves and Dutch ovens, stoves fueled by propane, white gas or LPG are allowed. Smoking outside an enclosed vehicle or building and operating motorized vehicles off designated roads and trails are also not permitted.

Warm Lake Road remains closed except to fire personnel and property owners in Yellow Pine, Johnson Creek and Big Creek. The Warm Lake area remains closed to all but emergency traffic. Yellow Pine and Johnson Creek remain under a Level 2 Evacuation Order, but should be prepared for a higher level evacuation at any time.

Cascade Complex Update Total: 242,709 acres, 26% contained

Monumental Fire - 194,139 acres, Riordan Fire - 48,570 acres

Very active fire behavior was observed yesterday. A successful burnout operation was performed in the Landmark area. Work is progressing to secure the southern edge of the fire west of the 555 Road in Bull Creek drainage. Night crews continue to patrol the Yellow Pine, Landmark and Warm Lake areas for structure protection. The Monumental and Riordan Fires are likely to grow together at an area near Chilcoot Peak.

Resources: 654 personnel, 11 crews, 9 aircraft, 32 engines
