Current Situation: The Hawken Fire reached 80% containment on Saturday, and the 2,710 acre fire did not increase in size when winds tested the containment lines. Pockets of unburned fuel burned during the afternoon, creating small smoke columns and prompted a flurry of calls from concerned residents.
"The perimeter of the fire looks very good and the smoke columns are well inside the fire line. We can expect to see smoke coming from the interior of the fire for weeks or months to come," said Grace Newell, Carson District Fire Management Officer.
Management of the fire will transfer to a Western Great Basin Type III team at 6:00 p.m. Sunday. Incident Commander Billy Britt and his team will further secure the fire lines until the fire reaches 100% containment. As part of the transfer, public information will be provided by Franklin Pemberton, US Forest Service Public Affairs Officer (775)884-8150.
Fire managers have continued releasing firefighting resources to assist with other high priority fires burning throughout the West. Personnel from the Hawken Fire are being reassigned to other fires as needed. Nevada currently has 20 fires that have burned over 369,000 total acres.
Closure Information: A closure order remains in effect for the area around the Hawken Fire. As weekend and summer recreation continue, the public is urged to adhere to the Forest closure as crews and equipment are still working in the area. For more information concerning the closure, contact the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest at 775-882-2766 or http://www.sierrafront.net/.
