Current Situation: A Type I Incident Management Team arrived yesterday to begin the transition with the Whalen's Type II team. This morning the Rocky Mountain Type 1 Incident Management Team, with Kim Martin as Incident Commander, assumed command of the fire. Today the team will focus on getting familiar with the terrain and fire behavior in the fire area while continuing to build on the good work done by the Type II team and local initial attack forces.

Crews on the north and east flanks of the fire will work to improve fire line that is in place and patrol the fire area near structures. On the south and west flanks of the fire crews will continue to construct and improve hand line. Five helicopters have been assigned to the fire and will assist fire crews and initial attack of new fires when requested.

Firefighter and public safety is the number one priority. Residents and visitors to the Reno area are advised that heavy smoke may result in limited visibility on major roadways. Residents adjacent to the fire area are reminded to use caution when leaving and returning home due to the increase in fire traffic as fire crews travel to and from the fire. Non-residents are asked to avoid the areas adjacent to the fire to lessen congestion for those involved with fire operations.

Closure Information: A closure order is in effect for the area around the Hawken Fire. For more information concerning the closure, contact the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest at 775-882-2766 or www.sierrafront.net

Special Note: Due to the current drought conditions everyone is reminded to take care not to start additional fires. Motorists are advised to be careful when driving off road, because hot exhausts can ignite dry vegetation.
