Citadel Fire Update
Shoshone National Forest
Saturday July 7, 2007 8:00 am
Friday's Fire Activity: Crews connected more fire line today on the northeast flank. One crew continues the monitoring of constructed line, to ensure that there no escapes outside the line. They also mopped up within the perimeter. Helicopters supported crews by ferrying supplies and making bucket drops on hot spots.
A structural protection specialist arrived on the fire today. He is working closely with the Park County Fire Warden to identify areas and strategies for protecting homes in the Green and Whit Creek drainages, should the need ever arise in connection with either this fire or a different fire. The pines and Douglas-fir in these drainages are being killed by bark beetles, which exacerbates the fire danger.
Today's Planned Actions: Steady progress is being made toward containment. Crews will continue to work directly on the fire's north edges and continue to connect sections of fire line. At least one crew will mop up and hold the contained perimeter. If the weather cooperates the team will begin planning the transition back to local resources.
Fire danger on the Shoshone National Forest is extreme. Today, fire restrictions are in place on the Shoshone National Forest. All fires must be confined to installed metal rings in designated developed recreation sites within the forest. To view the complete text of the restriction and a list of designated sites and map of the restricted area, go the forest's website at www.fs.fed.us/r2/shoshone. Fireworks are illegal on public land.
Closures: For public safety the Bobcat, Houlihan and Hardpan Creeks drainages are closed. The closure includes all trails in the drainages, and Hardpan Lake.
Acres burned: 2,004
Percent contained: 60%
Cause: Lightning started the fire on 6/25.
Expected containment: July 20, 2007
Incident Commander: Bill Hahnenberg
Cost to date: $1,474,000
200 people are working on the Citadel fire. There have been no injuries.
