Incident:
Released: 8/15/2006
The Hunter Fire, located on the Covelo and Grindstone Ranger Districts on the Mendocino National Forest, continues to actively burn within the fire control lines. Some smoke is to be expected from the interior fires although as time goes by, it will decrease. The outlook is optimistic as firefighters on the fire report great reductions in fuel. Ultimately, this will have a healthy effect on the forest, improving deer habitat and creating a mosaic effect of trees and grassy areas on the steep, rugged terrain. Public and firefighter safety remains the first priority as crews continue to work at the challenging task of containing and eventually controlling this fire. Travel to and from the fire and the moving of equipment, both on the ground and in the air are always a safety concern. We would like to thank the local folks for avoiding the fire area and it s heavy traffic. During the late afternoon on August 13th, California Department of Forestry and Fire and the Covelo Fire Departmant responded to two vegetation fires in the Covelo area. Quick and decisive actions by firefighters contained the fire north of Covelo to 3 acres and the fire on the westside of Covelo to 1/2 acre. Covelo Fire Chief Baker stated both fires are under investigation. The M1 and M61 roads remain closed for public safety. Visitors are reminded of the latest closure of additional roads along the eastern side of the fire. Further information on this closure (Order NO. 08-06-06) may be obtained at (530) 934-3316. Fire Information can be obtained from the Hunter Fire Information Center at (707) 983-6825.
