Sierra Wildland Fire Update

On Scene Contact: Dennis Cross, Fire Information Officer Fire Status: Active Location: Between the cities of Corona and Orange Acres Burned: 9850 Cause: Probable escape prescribed fire Injuries: 8 Percent Contained 71% Date Started: February 6, 2006 Expected Containment Date: 2/12/2006 Resources: Hand Crew 57 Helicopters 5 Air Tankers 5 Engine 95 Water Tenders 19 Dozers 13 Total Personnel assigned to fire: 1,789 Current Fire Situation: The fire began at approximately 0428 Hrs on February 6, 2006, in the Cleveland National Forest. A unified command was established with the U.S Forest Service, CDF, Orange County Fire Authority, City of Anaheim, and City of Orange. All agencies will work together to manage the incident. Firefighters are working to construct and secure fire line in extremely steep and rugged terrain. The evacuation order for people with homes in the affected areas of the cities of Anaheim and Orange was lifted as of 4:00 p.m. February 7. The fire continues to be under investigation. Preliminary results from the fire investigation team indicate this was an escaped prescribed burn. Roads reopened: Toll Road 241, the 91 freeways and highway 133 open. Incident Priorities: - Provide for Public and firefighter safety and protection of property - Keep suppression costs commensurate with values at risk. - Be sensitive to the concerns of the public and communities at risk and keep them informed. - Protect sensitive environmental areas, threatened and endangered species and arch sites. Weather and Fire Behavior: Higher humidity, lower temperatures, and decreasing winds. Agencies Involved: US Forest Service, CDF, Orange County Fire Authority, City of Anaheim, CHP, Orange County Sheriff, Southern Cal.
