LITTLE BALD MOUNTAIN FIRE UPDATE
Grantsville, Utah - August 4, 2008 - The lightning caused Little Bald Mountain fire is approximately 513 acres and estimated to be 25% contained. The fire is located in South Willow Canyon in the Stansbury Mountains near Grantsville. The fire started July 31, 2008 and is burning in heavy timber and steep rocky terrain.
Yesterday, the fire slowly continued to back down hill towards the South Willow Canyon road. The fire was active with some single tree torching and areas of smoldering brush and understory. Crews were able to tie division W hand line into the back side of division A. Today, crews will strengthen existing fire lines while putting out hot spots and cold trailing. All engines will be patrolling fires edge on the road and working any areas with potential fire spread or spotting. One medium helicopter and one sky cranes will continue to support crews with water drops and supply needs. Portions of the fire are located within the Deseret Peak Wilderness and are being managed by MIST (Minimum Impact Suppression Tactics) to minimize environmental damage.
Resources assigned: Eight 20 person crews, two helicopters, 1 water tender, and 7 engines are currently assigned to the fire. Resources are from Nevada, Utah, and Idaho.
Closures - Box Elder Canyon, South Willow Canyon, North Willow Canyon, and campgrounds in those areas are closed for public safety and to allow access for fire suppression equipment. The fire is approximately 2 miles from private residents located at the mouth of South Willow Canyon. At this time the threat to these residences is minimal.
Cooperators are from the following agencies - Tooele County, Grantsville City, Tooele City, Layton City, Utah Division of Forestry Fire and State Lands, Bureau of Land Management, Salt Lake County and U.S. Forest Service.
