CORNER CANYON FIRE UPDATE

Salt Lake City, August 26, 2008 - The Corner Canyon Fire began at 12:15 PM yesterday. The fire has burned an estimated 600 acres of Forest Service land above Draper City. It's burning in grass and brush and moving east up hill away from structures. There is no expected containment or control for today. The U.S. Forest Service and Salt Lake Unified Fire Authority are managing the fire incident under a unified command.

There are currently 144 firefighters working the fire. United Fire Authority, Forest Service, Sandy City, Murray City, Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands, South Jordan and Midvale city have provided a total of 15 engines. Two handcrews will begin work today with an additional four joining the effort throughout the day. There are three helicopters on site including one Type I helicopter capable of carrying 2,000 gallons of water. Two Heavy air tankers and 2 Single Engine Air Tankers (SEAT) are also providing suppression support.

A total of 112 structures are threatened and will remain so until fire is contained. There are no anticipated evacuations for today and the occupants of 54 homes were able to return to their residences at 8 PM last night after mandatory evacuations were lifted.

CLOSURES. All roads leading east into the incident area will remain closed. The Bonneville Shoreline Trail in the Draper area is closed to the public. Fire management requests that public travel along Highland Drive should be minimal due to fire traffic. Officials ask that there will also be no stopping along Highland Drive. Draper City Park and the Draper Rodeo Grounds are being used by the fire management personnel.

This fire was human caused and is under investigation. Anybody that may have seen anything about noon on the south end of the fire, or taken photos as the fire started, please contact the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office at (801) 743-7000.

Fire managers request that individuals stay out of the fire area, for firefighter and public safety.
