Lake Selmac's Mallard Loop Camping Area Reopens
Grants Pass, OR - Larry Wade's Type 3 incident management team assumed command at 3pm yesterday. The new team's base of operations is at the Wild Rivers Ranger District office.
The Horse Mountain Fire was declared contained on Sunday evening, August 31. Fire managers made the declaration based on the current condition of the fire and the number of fire fighters continuing to work on the fire. Firefighters are continuing mop-up and rehab on the 1,062-acre fire.
The rehab efforts include repairing roads and installing erosion mitigation (waterbars, grading, mulching and seeding).
"We strongly encourage people to continue to honor the road closures that remain in effect." said Incident Commander Larry Wade. "Firefighters are still working in the area and the fire has yet to be declared controlled."
The Illinois River Road remains open, but there may still be delays as the road construction and recreation improvements continue in the coming week.
Road closure-- To provide for firefighter and public safety adjacent to the Horse Mountain Fire the following closures are still in effect:
- Forest Road 4105 is closed from where it joins the Illinois River Road to the School Flat area.
- Forest Road 2524 is closed from where it joins the Forest Road 25 at the area known locally as the Four Corners.
- Spalding Pond Campground.
The Mallard Loop section of Josephine County's Lake Selmac Campground has reopened and is available for reservation and camping.
Current resources on the fire include four Type 2 crews, one helicopter, two engines, one dozer, and one water tenders - a total of 107 people.
Resources on the fire include representatives from U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, Oregon Department of Forestry, National Park Service, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Service, State of Colorado, and private contractors.
