Horse Mountain Fire 90 Percent Contained
Grants Pass, OR - The1,062-acre Horse Mountain Fire is 90 percent contained and is expected to be fully contained by September 1.
Firefighters are currently focusing their efforts on mop-up of hot spots 300 feet in from the fire edge. Rehabilitation efforts include installing waterbars to slow runoff, mulching, seeding and repairing roads.
"Mop-up and rehabilitation efforts are going well," said Deputy Incident Commander Buz VanSkike. "Even though we are winding down fire fighting operations, fire traffic in the area will remain heavy through the weekend ... we want everyone to drive safely."
The Illinois River Road remains open, but there may still be delays due to road construction.
Road closure-- To provide for firefighter and public safety adjacent to the Horse Mountain
Fire:
- Forest Road 4105 is closed from where it joins the Illinois River Road to the School Flat area.
- Forest Road 2524 is closed from where it joins the Forest Road 25 at the area know locally as the Four Corners.
- Spalding Pond Campground remains closed.
- The Boy Scout Area of Josephine County's Lake Selmac Park Campground remains closed.
Current resources on the fire include six Interagency Hot Shot crews, seven Type 2 crews, three helicopters, five engines, one dozer and four water tenders - a total of 406 people.
Resources on the fire include representatives from U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, Oregon Department of Forestry, Bureau of Indian Affairs, National Park Service, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, National Weather Service, State of Utah and private contractors.
