Horse Mountain Fire Now 60 Percent Contained

Grants Pass, OR - Firefighting operations on the 781-acre Horse Mountain Fire are meeting with continued success.

The Horse Mountain Fire is the only actively burning fire remaining in the Wild Rivers Complex.

Burnout operations along the fireline on the southwest flank tied successfully into Soldier Creek. The north and northeastern fireline is in mop-up and rehabilitation efforts will begin today.

Forest Road 4105 is closed from the Illinois River Road to the School Flat area to provide for firefighter and public safety adjacent to the Horse Mountain Fire.

The Boy Scout Area of the Lake Selmac Josephine County Park Campground and Spalding Pond Campground remain closed.

"We expect a slow warming trend over the next three days," said Incident Commander Trainee John Kidd. "Fire behavior should be moderate, giving our firefighters a chance to more fully secure the fire perimeter."

Overall, the Wild Rivers Complex currently is 800 acres and is 60 percent contained.

Current resources on the fires include eight Interagency Hot Shot crews, 12 Type 2 crews, seven helicopters, 13 engines, five dozers and eight water tenders - a total of 596 people.

Resources on the fire include representatives from U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, Oregon Department of Forestry, Bureau of Indian Affairs, National Park Service, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, National Weather Service, State of Utah and private contractors.
