Progress Continues on Horse Mountain Fire
Grants Pass, OR - "Thanks to the firefighters' hard work, we've made a lot of good progress in the last few days," said Incident Commander Tom Suwyn. "This is steep, rugged country to work in... our folks are working hard and doing it safely, everyone appreciates their efforts."
The public is asked to be aware that Forest Road 4105 will be closed from the Illinois River Road to the School Flat area. This is to provide for firefighter and public safety adjacent to the Horse Mountain Fire.
The Bolan Lake Campground and Lookout have been reopened. The Boy Scout Area of the Lake Selmac State Park Campground and Spalding Pond Campground remain closed.
The Horse Mountain Fire is the only actively burning fire remaining in the Wild Rivers Complex. Fire growth on the western flank has been slowed by the use of heavy helicopter water drops. The north and northeastern portions of the fire have a secure line while the fire burned actively yesterday on the south and southeast flanks.
The Wild Rivers Complex currently is 739 acres and is 55 percent contained.
Cooler weather is forecasted for today but a return to hot and dry weather is anticipated for the remainder of the week.
Current resources on the fires include nine Interagency Hot Shot crews, 12 Type 2 crews, seven helicopters, nine engines, five dozers and seven water tenders - a total of 609 people.
Resources on the fire include representatives from U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, Oregon Department of Forestry, Bureau of Indian Affairs, National Park Service, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, National Weather Service, State of Utah and private contractors.
