SLINKARD FIRE

STATUS RESOURCES Estimated Acres Burned: 223 Crews: 15 Engines: 17Estimated Percent Contained: 15% Helicopters: 4Expected Full Containment: August 30, 2008 Dozers: 5 Water Tenders: 8Cause: Lightning Date Started: August 17, 2008 Total Resources Assigned: 431 Structures Threatened: 13 residences ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Current Fire Situation: The fire is located approximately four miles southeast of Seiad Valley and is burning in timber with heavy fuels and pockets of multiple snags. Steep terrain, rolling burning material, and snags are limiting direct fire suppression opportunities along the northern flank of the fire, and restricting night shift operations. The fire continues to spread downhill north towards Highway 96 and west towards Walker Creek.

Today's Objectives: Fire crews will provide point protection for structures along Highway 96 and will scout the ridge system from Granite Point to Slinkard Peak for possible indirect opportunities. Firefighters will continue to construct indirect line along the southern flank of the fire from Slinkard Peak to Highway 96, and will complete and improve the contingency line east of the fire. Fire crews will complete prep work along Walker Creek Ranch Road on the west side of the fire to prepare for burning operations. Crews will also initiate mopping up hot spots along the western flank of the fire.

Area Closures: The potential exists for forest and road closures within the Slinkard Fire area. A current forest closure map and description may be found at: www.fs.fed.us/r5/klamath/conditions/.

Evacuations: There are no evacuation orders at this time. Highway 96 is currently open to traffic this morning. For up to the minute road information call Caltrans at 1-800-427-7623 or www.dot.ca.gov/hq/roadinfo/.

Remarks: Northern California Interagency Incident Management (NorCal) Team II is managing the fire for the Klamath National Forest.
