Incident: Marteen Wildland Fire Used for Resource Benefit

Fire Started: August 7, 2008
Location: 15 miles northeast of Williams, AZ - north of Forest Road 135
Objectives: Managers are taking advantage of favorable conditions to re-establish fire as an important part of a healthy ecosystem. The fire is benefitting the landscape by reducing hazardous fuels, decreasing the size and intensity of future fires in the area and improving forest health.
Fuels: Ponderosa pine, grass, juniper
Size: 469 acres
Resources committed: 1 engine, miscellaneous personnel. Total personnel = 8
Summary: Today, personnel will implement management actions to prevent fire spread toward private property. Friday, personnel took measures to protect archaeological sites. Managers are also developing a comprehensive strategy that outlines management actions that will be implemented throughout the duration of the incident.
Air Quality: Light southwest winds are contributing to good smoke dispersal.
Fire Behavior: Generally, fire is creeping along the ground, flame lengths are less than 1 foot with some isolated torching. The fire is spreading to the north, northwest, and east through Spring Valley Wash.
Weather: The general weather forecast is mostly sunny, temperatures in the 80's, light southwest winds to 10 miles per hour with a slight chance of afternoon thunderstorms. Fire activity is expected to increase under current conditions.
Closures: There are no closures associated with this fire. Hikers, hunters and campers need to be aware of ongoing fire activity and use caution while traveling near the fires.
