Incident: Wildland fire, lightning-caused, reported on August 7, 2008
Location: 3 miles southeast of Kamiah, ID
Jurisdiction: Idaho Department of Lands, Maggie Creek Supervisory Area
Cooperating Agencies: Glenwood Caribel, Kooskia, Kamiah, Harpster and Sunnyside VFDs
Incident Commander: Mark Grant, Northern Rockies Type II Incident Management Team (IMT).
Current Size: 800 acres Containment: 100%
Yesterday's Activity: The Church Canyon Fire was declared 100% contained late on Thursday afternoon. The crews focused efforts on finding "hot spots" and eliminating them with water and hand tools. Firefighting apparatus, such as hoses and tanks, was removed from the incident. Dozer lines and hand-constructed fire lines were rehabilitated by pulling back berms and constructing waterbars. An early morning helicopter infrared flight assisted firefighters with locating residual hot spots.
Current Resources: The number of firefighters on the incident is 256. Resources assigned include six 20-person crews, two dozers, three helicopters, six engines and nine water tenders. Demobilization of excess resources will continue.
Today's Strategy: Firefighters will continue to check fire perimeters for any hot spots and will use water to mop-up for approximately 150 feet into the black. All remaining dozer and hand lines will be rehabilitated and water bars constructed to prevent erosion. The weather will remain hot and dry throughout the weekend.
Transfer of Command: Mark Grant's Northern Rockies Incident Management Team will transfer command back to the local Idaho Department of Lands, Maggie Creek Supervisory Area Office in Kamiah, Idaho on Saturday morning. The new Incident Commander will be Keith Brink.
