Office hours: 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Incident: Wildland fire, lightning-caused, reported on August 7, 2008
Location: 3 miles southeast of Kamiah, ID
Jurisdiction: Idaho Department of Lands, Maggie Creek Supervisory Area
Cooperating Agencies: Glenwood Caribell, Kooskia, Kamiah, Harpster and Sunnyside VFDs
Incident Commander: Mark Grant, Northern Rockies Type II Incident Management Team (IMT).
Current Size: 800 acres Containment: 80%
Yesterday's Activity: Hand crews completed difficult fireline on the steep and rugged northeast and western flanks of the fire. In the same areas, helicopters dropped water to cool hot spots in an unburned stringer of timber. Suppression activities on all other flanks consisted mostly of mop-up operations. Night shift engines patrolled for spot fires along the perimeter.
Current Resources: The number of firefighters on the incident is 297. Resources assigned include seven 20-person crews, three dozers, four helicopters, five engines and eight water tenders.
Today's Strategy: Firefighting personnel will continue with minor line improvements, with an increased emphasis on mop-up of smoldering sections of line. Firefighters will continue to check fire perimeters for any hot spots and will use water to "mop up" for approximately 150 feet into the black. Rehabilitation specialists will assess the fire area and dozer lines for rehabilitation needs; personnel will initiate erosion control measures as identified.
Today's weather forecast calls for warmer and drier conditions, with light winds. A weak cold front is predicted to pass through the fire area, bringing northwest winds up to 10 mph.
Special Messages/Closures: The public is urged to drive carefully on both the Beaverslide and Kidder Ridge Roads due to the increased fire traffic.
Vegetation is quickly drying out, and fire danger in the Maggie Creek Supervisory Area is VERY HIGH. Please use extreme caution when enjoying the outdoors!
