Gnarl Ridge Fire Daily Update
Saturday, October 4, 2008
The rain rolled in on the Gnarl Ridge Fire yesterday. The Remote Access Weather Station (RAWS) at Cloud Cap recorded over 2.2 inches of rain in 24 hours, plus winds gusting up to 37 miles per hour. Additional rains, heavy at times, are forecasted to hit the fire area between now and Tuesday.
This morning, fire supervisors and Hood River Ranger District personnel are assessing conditions on and near the fire.
The heavy rainfall has triggered a safety stand-down for the fire fighters. Crews and equipment will be staged at the Incident Command Post in Odell until it is determined to be safe to send them up to the fire. More personnel and equipment are being released as surplus.
With the storms several streams, including Polallie, Eliot, and Tilly Jane Creeks, are areas of high concern. These streams have suffered landslides in the past that have damaged roads, including Hwy. 35. Some of these slides were triggered by heavy rains similar to what the area is having now.
Despite Friday's rain, fire personnel continued to work on improving the drainage on roads and fire lines. This included patrolling sections of roads that had newly-cleared culverts. In some areas, soil and rock loosened by the fire, drainage work, and rain threatened to block the culverts again.
The crews working with the chippers continued to make excellent progress toward cleaning up the piles of woody debris along the roads. Some larger pieces of wood have been cut into firewood and will be made accessible to the community. Please contact the Hood River Ranger District for more information.
Also on Friday, the last of the hose and equipment were removed from around Cloud Cap and Tilly Jane. These materials were brought down the hill before the Cloud Cap Road became too hazardous to drive.
