Gooseberry Fire Near Red Rock Spread to 800 Acres
Incident: Gooseberry Wildland Fire
Released: 7/29/2008
The Gooseberry Fire near Red Rock spread to 800 acres by 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
The fire, located in Nevada three miles east of U.S. 395 in Seven Lakes Mountains south of Dry Valley, started at 12:25 p.m. and is believed to have been caused by lightning.
One structure was threatened by the fire on Tuesday evening. The Reno Fire Department sent five structure engines as a precaution.
Afternoon winds made it difficult for crews to establish fire lines, according to a news release from the Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center. The fire was moving downhill from the lightning strike site in the Seven Lakes Mountains to the northeast in Dry Valley.
Fire information officer Mark Struble with the Bureau of Land Management said the hope was that winds would die down in the evening as temperatures cooled. He said temperatures Tuesday night were expected to be about 5 degrees cooler than the previous night with increased humidity, which should also help in fighting the fire.
"We have quite a bit of resources out there, we just kind of have to hope for the best," he said.
The Bureau of Land Management, Reno Fire Department, U.S. Forest Service, Nevada Division of Forestry, CalFire and Doyle Volunteer Fire Department responded with four air tankers, two helicopters, one water tender, two dozers, four hand crews, 17 engines, 10 command staff and 150 personnel.
