Gunbarrel Update 8/26/08 2:15 PM

Incident: Gunbarrel Wildland Fire
Released: 8/26/2008

Fire Advisory Given for Goff Creek Lodge

The Gunbarrel fire is active on the north side of the North Fork Highway (Hwy 14-16-20) about 15 miles east of the entrance to Yellowstone National Park. This has two immediate consequences.

First, like Elephant Head, Goff Creek Lodge also has now been advised of the possibility they will be evacuated in the next 6 to 18 hours. This is not an evacuation notice for either Lodge, but rather is a warning so that people may be fully prepared should circumstances change.

Second, traffic delays and possible brief closures this afternoon are likely. The Park County Sheriff is in place to assist with traffic control. The fire is close enough to the Highway that smoke occasionally reduces visibility. Also, burnout activities near the road are possible.

On the east side of the fire, firefighters assigned to keep fire away from homes are holding their own. The fire's activity makes their job especially challenging today.

Updates will continue to be emailed from gunbarrelfire@gmail.com as they become available. If you wish to receive these updates and did not receive this update via email, send a request to be added to the distribution list.

Note to editors: This press release is issued jointly by the Park County Sheriff and the Gunbarrel Fire Incident Commander. The shared information center is at 866 588-5206.
