This is the last update for the Cold Springs Fire from the Type III Incident Management Team, led by Alan Lawson, Incident Commander.
Final acreage has remained at 7,729 acres with 100% containment on August 1, 2008. The fire is being returned to Type IV management by each agency affected by the Cold Springs Fire on
Monday, August 4,. The Yakama Nation, Washington Department of Natural Resources, and the Gifford Pinchot National Forest will have crews committed to the incident within their boundaries. Rehabilitation of burned areas will also be completed by each individual agency.
The Gifford Pinchot National Forest has lifted some of the closure area to allow for access to the South Climb of Mt. Adams. Detailed information on open areas may be obtained from the Mt. Adams Ranger District at 509.395.3402. Much of the area on Mt. Adams remains closed to public use due to the wildland fire operations ongoing and the number of hazard trees in the area. Yakama Nation closures include: Bird Creek, Mirror Lake, and Bench. The State of Washington Department of Natural Resources campgrounds are open. Contact for WaDNR Is Wenachee Dispatch 509.884.3473.
FIRE SUMMARY: Crews worked hard to back haul almost fifty miles of hose lay used for the extensive mop up. Chase trucks and air support hauled the line to camp where it was prepared to return to Boise Fire Cache. Ground crews, dozers, and engine crews have cold trailed the south and west sections of the fire to standards of 300 to 500 feet. On the east and northeast sections of the fire the mop up and cold trailing was as deep as 1000 feet to the interior Minimum Impact Suppression Techniques (MIST) were used in the N perimeter of the fire in subalpine forested areas.
While the fire remains in 100% containment, pockets of heat remain in isolated interior spots in heavy downed timber. These spots may flare up intermittently with extended dry and hot weather and smoke with occasional torching. Due to the density of fuels within specific areas of the fire full control will not occur until a season ending event such as a wetting rain or snow. Remaining fire personnel will be released and fire camp will vacate the Trout Lake School by Tuesday, August 3, 2008. One heavy helicopter and one light helicopter were released Sunday, August 3, 2008. The TFR will be lifted on Monday, August 4, 2008,
The Type III IMT team thanks the community of Trout Lake and Glenwood for their support and cooperation during Cold Springs Fire operations.
