Access to Mt. Adams South Climb Forest officials announced July 31, 2008, that the access to Mt. Adams south climb route will reopen on August 1. All areas, including all trails and roads, east and south of the 80, 8040 and 8040-500 roads continue to be closed. The Round-the-Mountain Trail #9 remains closed east of South Climb Trail #183. Forest Road 82 remains closed at the Forest Boundary north of Trout Lake. Yakama Nation closures for Bird Creek, Mirror Lake and Bench Lake remain in effect .
FIRE ACTIVITY SUMMARY: Acreage has remained at 7729 acres with 100% containment.
Crews have mopped up the W, S, and E/NE sections of the fire to standards of 300 to 1000 feet to the interior. Minimum Impact Suppression Techniques ( MIST ) were used in the N perimeter of the fire in subalpine forested areas. Back hauling of back-hauling the almost fifty miles of hose is almost completed, with assistance of chaser trucks and helicopter transport. Within the perimeter, the fire continues to smolder and creep with heavy dead and down fuels. Snag hazard remains high due to the number of hazardous dead trees. Patrol and initial attack support is ongoing. One heavy helicopter and one light helicopter are committed to the fire at present. This week a Burned Area Rehabilitation Evaluation team is analyzing approaches to mitigate fire damage in the long term strategy.
Due to the density of fuels within specific areas of the fire full containment will not occur until a season ending event such as a wetting rain or snow. Residents should expect to see smoke and intermittent activity within the fire perimeter as the warmest and driest summer weather approaches
