Alps Complex Final Update July 9, 2008

Incident: Alps Complex Wildland Fire
Released: 7/9/2008

LAST UPDATE FOR THE ALPS COMPLEX

Current Fire Situation: At 0600 tomorrow morning, July 11, 2008, the management of the fires within the Alps Complex will transfer to the Iron Complex. Information will still be available on these fires, but it will be provided by the Iron Complex. There was very little activity on the Granite fire yesterday. The southern portions of the fire look good and the lines are holding. Containment on the Granite has increased to 80% percent. On the Carey Fire, firefighters were able to clear a new access route for crews and pack strings on the New River trail. The New River Trail will provide a shorter and less strenuous route for both crews and pack strings. The smokejumpers that were working on the north side of the Carey Fire hiked out yesterday and a new crew will be going in today.

Planned Actions: Both fires are within the Trinity Alps wilderness. The crews working on the Granite and Carey fires continue to using Minimum Impact Suppression Techniques (MIST). Today, Crews on the Granite Fire will continue to secure the perimeters along Bear Creek and Canyon Creek and monitor and control hot spots on the northern edge. On the Carey fire, the new crew that will be hiking in will clear trail as needed as they go and crews already on the fire will continue to extinguish hot spots along the fire edge and work to further contain the fire's progress.

Safety: With the temperatures increasing and crews working in tough conditions, an advisory has been relayed to the crews to pay extra attention to safety. Crews need to maintain hydration and watch out for hazardous conditions on the fires such as rolling debris, falling snags, and unstable footing.

Weather: The Weather Service has issued a red flag weather warning due to low relative humidity and winds continuing through Thursday evening. Weather today will be hot and smoky with temperatures ranging from the high 90s to triple digits.
