Cub Fire: 11,362 Acres - 68% Containment

Total Estimated Fire Size: 16,144 Acres Total Estimated Fire Containment: 76%

Estimated Expected Containment: July 20, 2008

Committed Resources: 888 total personnel including 26 Crews, 6 Helicopters, 42 Engines, 9 Dozers, 27 Water Tenders, and fire support personnel

Current Fire Situation: The Cub Complex includes both the Onion and Cub fires that are located in steep terrain. Control lines have been established around the Onion fire. Control lines have been established along the northern, eastern, and southeast flanks of the Cub fire. The fire has spread to the south and has reached Rattlesnake Creek along a significant portion of the northern side of the drainage. The fire still has the potential to cross Rattlesnake Creek and move uphill to the south on the northern aspect of the drainage where steep terrain will cause slope driven runs. Aviation assets are critical to support operations in the Rattlesnake Creek drainage.

Planned Actions: Firefighters for the Onion fire continue to patrol the fire perimeter, while firefighters for the Cub fire patrol and mop-up hot spots within the north and east sides of the fire perimeter. Fire crews started the burnout yesterday around the southeastern portion of the perimeter and will continue the burnout operation today along the southern fire perimeter. Crews will begin chipping debris from the contingency line construction along the 27N06 road north of Jonesville and Butte Meadows communities. Crews continue rehabilitation along Highway 32. Fire suppression rehabilitation planning is ongoing with the Lassen National Forest for the Onion and Cub fires.

Evacuations and Closures: State Highway 32 is now open with controlled traffic through Deer Creek Canyon from the junction of Highway 36, south towards Chico. The public should expect short delays. Humboldt Road remains closed at the point that the paved portion of the road ends, just past of Jonesville.

The communities of Butte Meadows and Jonesville remain in Precautionary Threat Evacuation status.

Remarks: Northern California Interagency Incident Management (NorCal) Team II continues to manage the Cub Complex for the Lassen National Forest. Fire camp is established at Chester High School. Approximately 400 firefighters are staying at a remote camp located at the Lassen Boy Scout Camp, north of Butte Meadows.
