Crews Continuing to Make Good Progress on Yolla Bo
Incident: Yolla Bolly Complex Wildland Fire
Released: 8/6/2008
Current Fire Situation: The arrival of partly cloudy skies, cooler temperatures, & scattered showers has both aided firefighters, as well as posed some challenges. The cloud cover should help to moderate fire behavior, especially in the lighter fuels (e.g., grass), by increasing humidity levels. However, the gusty & erratic winds associated with today's scattered, lingering thunderstorms can fan the fires' flames & carry embers far aloft. Fire behavior is generally expected to be flanking & down hill backing, with some isolated torching in areas with heavier fuels concentrations.
Today's Objectives: Firefighters are making outstanding progress in "corraling" the remaining, uncontrolled flame fronts burning in the Complex. Weather permitting, firefighters intend to initiate burnout operations northward along Powell Ridge to the South Fork of the Trinity River in order to strengthen newly constructed control lines & check the northwesterly spread of the Vinegar Fire (43,000 acres, 60% contained) and the Grouse Fire (3,517 acres, 20% contained). Crews will be busily patrolling & mopping up in the vicinity of "Dead Puppy Ridge" where successful burnout operations have been conducted over the past, few days. The eastern & southern perimeters of the Vinegar Fire and the southern & western flanks of the Yellow Fire (29,396 acres, 50% contained) are now all in patrol status. Daily air patrols will keep an "eye in the sky" on these contained, relatively quiet portions of the these fires. Fire suppression rehabilitation is beginning on the Trough Fire (3,686 acres, 100% contained).
Structures & Resources Threatened: Because of the successful suppression activities, the wildfire threat to CAL FIRE and BLM areas, as well as privately-owned lands has lessened considerably. Structure protection to privately-owned lands in the Henthorne Lake area and Forest Service historic buildings will be discontinued in one or two more operational periods.
Additional Fire Information: The total acres burned within the Yolla Bolly Complex is @79,629 acres, with an estimated 60% containment. There are 568 personnel presently staffing the Complex. For more information, please contac the Yolla Bolly Incident Information Center at (530) 833-0357.
