Fires on Mendocino National Forest Prompt More Wil

Incident: Soda Complex: Wildland Fire
Released: 6/28/2008

Willows, June 28, 2008 - Multiple lightning-caused fires on the Mendocino National Forest have resulted in the closure of two additional Wilderness areas.

Effective immediately and until further notice, the Sanhedrin and Yuki Wildernesses in the national forest will be closed. Both of these are in Mendocino County. All of the Yolla Bolly-Middle Eel Wilderness has already been closed due to numerous wildland fires burning within the area.

"The purpose of these closures is to provide for public safety and facilitate fire suppression efforts," the closure order reads.

Severe lightning storms passed through most of northern California on June 20-21, triggering hundreds of fires. Dozens of fires were started on the Mendocino National Forest, many within rugged and remote areas. Many of these fires remain unstaffed, pending the arrival of additional firefighting resources.

For additional information, please contact the Information Center at (530) 934-1278. Copies of the closure orders and maps of the affected areas are available on the forest website at www.fs.fed.us/r5/mendocino/recreation/regs/closures/. Signs and maps will be posted at wilderness trail heads.
