Siskiyou/blue 2 Complex Update for Thursday, Augus
Incident: Siskiyou/ Blue 2 Complex-klamath Theater Wildland Fire
Released: 8/28/2008
A Fire Weather Watch has been upgraded to a Red Flag Warning today for strong winds and low relative humidity for the northern portion of the Siskiyou/Blue 2 Complex. Fire managers have been preparing containment lines and mopping-up near the perimeter of the fire for many days now in anticipation of a challenging wind event. Ridge top winds may create occasional flare-ups of vegetation in the upper elevations. In the interior of the fire, there is a potential for some unburned and recently burned vegetation to reburn and increase the amount of smoke produced over the fire area.
An aerial reconnaissance was conducted yesterday along with another infra-red helicopter flight to detect any heat source within the fire area. Scattered heat sources were detected well within the fire's perimeter and some along the fire line near the south west part of the fire. Fire crews will be assigned to the higher priority areas nearest to the fire line today. Many of the interior hot spots had little or no potential for creating concern. They are burning in relatively damp areas or in areas with significant rock outcrops and sparse fuels.
Repair and rehabilitation work is continuing in all areas of the fire. Excess fire hose is being brought in to fire camp for inventory, cleaning, and fire cache storage. Helicopters continue to support the fire fighters near the headwaters of Dillon Creek by dropping water on hot spots before crews access these sites and complete their mop-up work.
Closures: To protect public safety and facilitate fire suppression efforts, closures of trails and roads are in effect for the Klamath and Six Rivers National Forests. The Salmon River Road from Somes Bar eastward is open to the public. For information on the closures, refer to these Forest Service websites at: www.fs.fed.us/r5/klamath/conditions/ or www.fs.fed.us/r5/sixrivers/conditions/.
