Siskiyou/ Blue 2 Complex-klamath Theater News Release

Siskiyou and Blue 2 Complex Update for Saturday, A

Incident: Siskiyou/ Blue 2 Complex-klamath Theater Wildland Fire
Released: 8/23/2008

There is a warming and drying trend over the complex area. "The exposed fine fuels are drying out and will support active burning and smoldering. This will increase the amount of smoke produced", stated Steve Ziel, Fire Behavior Analyst.

Today, personnel on the east and southern portions of the complex will continue to mop-up where needed and accomplish repair and rehabilitation work along suppression lines.

Crews on the southwest corner of the fire are continuing to secure the fire lines along the confluence of Crescent City Fork and Blue Creek. Helicopters dropping water from suspended buckets are being used to help cool "hot" sections along the interior of the lower Blue Creek drainage.

Personnel are working with air operations and resource advisors in finding opportunities to secure the upper west side of the fire with helicopter water drops, cold trailing (a method of controlling a partly dead fire edge by careful inspection and feeling with the hand so as to detect any fire and extinguishing it by digging out every live spot and trenching any live edge.) and constructing fire line only when necessary.

The local tribal representatives and the Klamath and Six Rivers National Forests are providing recommendations for the careful management of cultural sites, ecological settings, and other areas of concerns with the ORCA Incident Management Team.

Closures: To protect public safety and facilitate fire suppression efforts, closures of trails and roads are in effect for the Klamath and Six Rivers National Forests. For information on the closures, refer to these websites at: www.fs.fed.us/r5/klamath/conditions/ or www.fs.fed.us/r5/sixrivers/conditions/.
