Firefighters Make Steady Progress

Incident: Corral Wildland Fire
Released: 7/4/2008

The predicted "red flag" weather conditions did not materialize yesterday, allowing firefighters to make significant progress in all divisions of the Corral Fire. Though winds were slightly higher than they have been the past, few days, they actually helped to fan small, subtle areas of heat just beneath the ground's surface - "hot spots" - so that crews could more easily detect and extinguish them. Interior areas of the fire with heavier fuels experienced some minor surface fire movement. Fire crews continued to expand, hold, and/or strengthen lines. With support from both helicopters and engines, firefighters were able to broaden mop-up operations along much of the existing control lines.

CAL FIRE, BLM, and Forest Service officials began to work on a coordinated, suppression rehabilitation plan for the fire area.

Today, plans call for crews to continue their steady press forward to contain the fire's remaining, uncontrolled perimeter. All divisions of the Corral Fire will extend their mop-up operations more deeply into the fire's interior. If the weather conditions permit, day operational engines may begin extending their patrols into the late evening hours in order to assure that the containment line is secure from potential flare-ups or "hot spots." With many weeks of the 2008 wildfire season ahead, Incident Commander Dave Larsen urged firefighters not to grow complacent in the face of the hot, gritty work associated with mop-up and "driving a stake in the heart of the Corral Fire."

Special Concerns:

Because of the high fire danger, CAL FIRE has suspended all burning permits in Lassen and Modoc counties. The Lassen National Forest has fire restrictions in place. Firewood cutting has been suspended, campfires are allowed only in designated recreation sites, and, vehicles are restricted to roads & trails. Eagle Lake is a popular destination for summer visitors; all recreational facilities remain open.

Independence Day Holiday revelers are reminded that all fireworks are prohibited

in the Lassen National Forest and on state and private lands.
