Windy Weather Will Test Firefighters
Incident: Corral Wildland Fire
Released: 7/4/2008
Firefighters made measurable progress in all divisions of the Corral Fire yesterday, holding and reinforcing lines and, with support from helicopters in the air and engines on the ground, were able to get more water to hot spots to aid in mop-up. Areas of greatest concern are the northern and southern perimeters - each impacted by prevailing winds and each with a considerable amount of unburned fuels. The Corral Fire is now 40% contained.
A helicopter from the Corral Fire assisted the California Department of Forestry & Fire Protection with initial attack on two new fires.
A continuing challenge for the fire suppression effort is the tendency for spotting - throwing embers out in front of the fire outside of the fire lines and establishing new fires. This is common in Ponderosa pine fuel types. Engines patrolling the perimeter have been instrumental in quickly extinguishing new spot fires as they arise.
Incident Commander Dave Larsen reminded firefighters of the importance of synchronized, steady work and this will surely be integral today, as a Red Flag warning for high winds will test fire lines and may increase the likelihood of new spot fires. Fire bosses have developed operations in consideration of incoming weather, and today will be a critical day in the overall suppression effort. Plans call for continued reinforcement and improvement of lines, extensive work in the heavy fuels along the northern and southern perimeters, and support from helicopters and airtankers as appropriate.
Because of the high fire danger, CAL FIRE has suspended all burning permits in Lassen and Modoc counties. The Lassen National Forest has fire restrictions in place. Firewood cutting has been suspended, campfires are allowed only in designated recreation sites, and, vehicles are restricted to roads & trails. Eagle Lake is a popular destination for summer visitors; all recreational facilities remain open.
As 4th of July weekend approaches, the public is reminded that all fireworks are prohibited in the Lassen National Forest and on state and private lands.
