Efforts Continue on Trigo Fire
Winds diminished but still continued to be a factor in firefighting efforts on the Trigo Fire east of Belen, NM. "Winds today were a far cry from what happened over the past few days." said Jeff Whitney, Incident Commander of the Southwest Area Incident Management Team. Whitney went on to say that good progress is being made on the fire, currently estimated at 13,680 acres with 45% contained.
The fire management team continues working closely with all the tribal, federal, state, county and local agencies to facilitate the return of evacuated residences as quickly as it can happen in a safe manner. This continues to be a top priority during this faze of the fire incident.
The public can expect to still see smoke from the interior of the fire over the next several days. Along with continued work on patrolling and strengthening the fire containment line, fire managers will burn out some of the islands of heavy fuel in the interior. This strategy is to reduce the threat of fire spotting over the containment line during another wind event. Weather over the next two days is predicted to favor firefighter efforts, but may change in mid-week.
