Trigo 4.23.08 Update
Incident: Trigo Fire Wildland Fire
Released: 4/23/2008
Date April 23, 2008 8:00 AM For Immediate Release
Firefighters Cautiously Optimistic
Despite extremely low humidity and very low fuel moisture, firefighters on the Trigo Incident were encouraged by yesterday's accomplishments. The west slope of the fire is relatively inactive now, and will be patrolled, with no direct action planned today. The eastern branch is more active, but containment lines along the leading edge are being mopped up, and will be tied to a secure dozer line along the southeastern flank today. Hotshot crews will continue to build hand line from this dozer line toward the Crest Trail on the Manzano summit.
Air tankers dropped 82,000 gallons of retardant on hotspots Tuesday, while heavy helicopters dowsed flames with about 40,000 gallons of water. Tankers and helicopters will continue to make drops today.
Large smoke columns were evident late Tuesday afternoon, as aerial ignition operations burned out interior fuels above New Canyon Campground. Containment lines on the northern flank in New Canyon will be reinforced today.
The local chapter of the American Red Cross has provided a toll free number (1-800-560-2302) for those needing assistance whose homes were lost or damaged by the Trigo fire.
