Mountainair, NM - April 16, 2008, 9 am: The Trigo Fire on the Mountainair Ranger District continued to grow overnight, although most of the growth was a slow, backing fire. The fire continues to burn solely on the west side of the Manzano Mountains. With a significant run, the fire could threaten Capilla Peak Lookout as well as several electronic sites.

Air resources were grounded early yesterday afternoon due to high winds. Fire personnel plan to resume air operations today. The use of air tankers and helicopters continues to be wind dependent. Hot Shot crews will continue flanking operations to attempt to line the fire. The fire is estimated at 400 to 600 acres, but due to lack of air resources, this acreage may be inaccurate as ground troops are unable to circle the fire. Fire fighters continue to be challenged by high winds as well as very steep, rugged terrain. Rolling debris due to the steepness of the hillsides is also posing problems as it has the potential of igniting fires below the fire fighters.

Torrance County Emergency Management would like to remind the public that smoke is expected to impact east Manzano mountain communities. The public is advised not to run air conditioners, keep all windows and doors closed and leave heavily impacted areas when possible. There are currently NO community evacuations; however, east Manzano residents are asked to be prepared in case the need for evacuations becomes necessary. Have important papers, pets, prescriptions and photos readily available in case the need for evacuation arises.
