MOUNTAINAIR, NM - November 23, 2007: The weather provided welcome relief to firefighters Thursday night as a winter storm dropped snow in the fire area. Continued snow is predicted for this evening. Despite the snowfall, the fire continues to burn and smolder with no active fire spread. Firefighters are planning to work on fire suppression today as conditions permit. Crews may also be working on some fuel clearing projects in the Mountainair area depending on weather conditions.
The recent snowfall has created other hazardous conditions for firefighters. Snow packed access roads, icy ground conditions, and snow laden branches have created dangerous situations for firefighters. One firefighter did sustain a knee injury during yesterday's suppression efforts.
