Firefighters Battling Ojo Peak Fire

MOUNTAINAIR, NM November 20, 2007: The Ojo Peak fire was reported at approximately 3 a.m. Monday morning and continues to burn in extremely rough, rocky terrain. The fire is burning on the South end of the Manzano Mountain Wilderness northwest of the Pine Shadow trailhead along the Crest Trail. The cause of the fire is currently being investigated.
Firefighters from around New Mexico will continue fire fighting efforts today. The Ojo Peak Fire has now grown to 40 acres with no containment as of yet. Fire behavior continued to be active overnight as relative humidity only increased to about 30%. Crews from Mt. Taylor, Santa Fe, Santa Clara and Mountainair Ranger District will be helicoptered into the fire today to allow fire fighters more time on the fireline. The hike into the Ojo fire would take approximately 2 hours otherwise. There are currently approximately 40 personnel working the Ojo Peak Fire.
Although an exact cause of the Ojo fire remains under investigation, the general public is reminded that conditions continue to be dry on our National Forest. Please use extreme caution when recreating in the Forest.
