Firefighters Battling Ojo Peak Fire

Incident: Ojo Peak Fire Wildland Fire
Released: 11/19/2007

MOUNTAINAIR, NM November 19, 2007: Firefighters from the Mountainair Ranger District are currently on the scene of a wildfire. The Ojo Peak fire was reported at approximately 3 a.m. this morning. Early reports have the fire size at about 30 acres. The district currently has 6 personnel on the fire line, with approximately 30 more expected later this afternoon.

The Ojo fire is burning on the South end of the Manzano Mountains around the Pine Shadow Trail close to the Crest Trail. The cause of the fire is currently unknown.

Unusually active fire behavior is being observed on the fireline while the steep, very rugged terrain also poses challenges for the firefighters. The Ojo Fire, just like the Agua Fire last month, is a rare November Fire for the Manzano Mountains, which usually experiences its peak fire season during the months of May through early July.
