A Number of Forest Roads and Trails Reopened

Yreka, CA (September 5, 2008)-A number of Klamath National Forest Roads have been reopened south of Happy Camp providing increased access to popular hunting and hiking areas. The reopened roads include, 15N10, 15N13, 15N19, and 15N38. In addition a number of Forest Trails have been reopened, including the Elk Creek Trail, Johnson's Hunting Ground Trail, South Fork Salmon Trail, and Ukonom Falls Trail. In the Forest area near Cecilville, Forest Road 38N01 and the South Fork Salmon Trail have been reopened.

A new trail closure was implemented August 5, 2008. The closure starts about 5 miles north of the Little North Fork Trailhead west of Sawyers Bar, California.

A number of Forest roads and trails continue to be closed because of current wildfires. Information on current closures is available on the Klamath National Forest web site at http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/klamath.

Safety items to keep in mind when hunting, horseback riding, walking, or camping in an area that has recently burned. Hazards may include:

·· Ash and needles on trails and footpaths can make for slippery conditions.

·· Burned-out stump holes can make the forest floor weak and unstable.

·· Unstable dead trees can be especially hazardous in windy conditions when they can fall suddenly without any warning.

·· Loose rocks and logs can create rolling debris.

·· Choose a safe place to camp, away from the burned area, in open areas out of the timber, away from falling or rolling hazards below cliffs and slopes.

Forest visitors should take proper safety precautions before leaving home and when arriving at their destination.

·· Check the weather forecast before leaving home.

·· Plan your trip with the most current fire information and use trails that avoid the fires

·· Let someone know where you are and your itinerary.

·· Locate your camp away from standing burned trees.

·· Be extremely careful with your fire use, as forest fuels continue to be critically dry and easily combustible.

Copies of the Klamath National Forest Closure Map as well as current closure orders and maps are available at local Forest Service offices as well as the Klamath National Forest web site at http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/klamath. Call the Fire Information Center at (530) 841 4451 for additional information and questions.
