Station Fire News Release

Station Fire Update Update Sept. 18, 2009

Incident: Station Fire Wildfire
Released: 9/18/2009

Firefighters continue to hold and mop up the 132 miles of containment line around the fire. They remain vigilant as weather predictions call for increased temperatures and lower humidity over the next few days. The remaining work is extremely difficult due to steep and rugged terrain. The estimated containment date is September 19 to allow for additional mop up to secure the perimeter.

In the area of Mt. Wilson, fire activity remains active and smoke may be seen in the area east of Mt. Wilson to Devore as undergrowth burns away and crews work to extinguish hot spots in this very rugged area. Commuters along Hwy. 138 and residents northeast of the fire may continue to see smoke over the next few days.

Hot spots continue to smoke inside the burned area of Big Tujunga. A containment line is completed between residences and smoldering hot spots, but some residents will continue to see smoke from their homes.

Infrared mapping conducted by aircraft have assisted firefighters on the ground in targeting and extinguishing hot spots near the fire perimeter.

Extensive Fire Suppression repair operations are ongoing. Crews and equipment are improving drainages, pulling debris from drains, knocking down dozer berms and repairing roads.

A Burn Area Emergency Response (BAER) team is assessing the burn area to determine the current and potential future impacts of the fire.
