Summit Springs News Release

Daily Update, Aug. 23, Summit Springs Complex

Incident: Summit Springs Wildfire
Released: 8/23/2008

Oregon Department of Forestry

Incident Management Team 3

Nancy Hirsch, Incident Commander

Summit Springs Complex

Daily Morning Information Update

For Saturday August 23, 2008

Firefighters have had several successful days building fire line and conducting mop-up activities on the Summit Springs Complex. Containment lines held on all three fires despite changing weather conditions. Incident Commander Nancy Hirsch complimented crews on their excellent safety record over the past week, and encouraged firefighters to continue aggressive but safe operations to bring these fires to conclusion.

Fire lines held on Green Ridge and Stevens Canyon Fires, with limited perimeter growth. Firefighters are continuing to patrol fire lines and conduct mop-up operations on both fires. The Green Ridge Fire remains a concern due to the potential for large burning material to escape the interior of the fire. Crews have begun using hand-held infrared devises to check for hot spots.

Decreased winds have helped firefighters stop the spread of the fire on the Summit Springs Fire. Crews are dealing with numerous spot fires on the north and east perimeters on this fire, and have responded to five hold-over fires. These small hold-over fires are lined and not expected to grow. Pockets of fuels in the interior of this fire also remain a concern for firefighters.

Firefighters will be dealing with hotter and drier weather on Saturday and Sunday. However, a cold front is expected to move into the area on Monday. Winds are not expected to hamper firefighting efforts this weekend.

The Incident Command Post was successfully moved to Sisters Rodeo Grounds on Friday. As a result of this move, the Fire Information line has a new information phone line. Please make a note of this new number, 541-549-1362.
