North Fork Idaho – The Nez Perce Fire was detected August 30 2013 on the North Fork Ranger District of the Salmon-Challis National Forest. The Nez Perce Fire was started by lightning is burning in grass and timber (Lodgepole pine Douglas Fire and subalpine fir) and is currently approximately 320 acres. The fire is located in the vicinity of Nez Perce Creek up Dahlonega Creek near Big Hole Pass approximately 4 miles east of Gibbonsville Idaho. Access to the fire is limited; there are no roads in the vicinity. Resources on the fire include one Type 2 hand crew and miscellaneous overhead. A Type I helicopter is also available if needed. As of 1800 today the Nez Perce fire will be managed by a Type 4 Incident Management Organization.
Minimal fire activity is being observed in all areas of the fire due to recent weather conditions and past actions taken.
“There has been a lot of work done to protect values that were at risk such as structures and historic sites said Incident Commander Ron White. We have also worked hard to secure the fire’s edge along Nez Perce Creek. The weather has been cooperating but the fire is not out. We have scaled back but will continue monitoring and patrolling until it is. That could be weeks in the future when we have a season ending weather event.”
Three trails have been closed to provide protection to forest visitors from the current fire safety hazards associated with the Nez Perce Fire. For more detailed information including a map please go to the following web site: http://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/article/3715/21388/
