Size in acres
Summary: On Saturday, August 24, 2013 a thunderstorm ignited the Kelley Fire 7 miles southeast of Featherville, Idaho. The fire is burning in a steep, remote area and is not easily accessible by fire crews. The fire started at about 10 acres and has now grown to over 16,000 acres.
Current Situation: There was notable participation at the public meeting in Fairfield last evening with close to 60 attendees. As of today, structure assessment has been completed up in the Big Smokey area. Crews will be taking advantage of increased moisture to gain ground and more aggressively push back on the fire. Tactics on the ground will have crews productively putting in line, mopping up along the perimeter of the fire, and going direct where feasible given the benefits of current weather conditions. In the air, helicopters will continue to strategically hit hot spots with both water and retardant drops. With the increased threat of rolling debris, slick and slippery slopes, and unpredictable showers, fire fighters will be even more highly focused on safety, watching out for one another today.
Weather: There is a significant threat of showers and thunderstorms over the fire area today, particularly during the afternoon and evening hours. Rainfall amounts up to a third of an inch are possible with locally heavier amounts possible under thunderstorms. This wet and unsettled weather is expected to persist into Thursday as well.
