Howard Fire – New Meadows Ranger District
Start Date: August 17, 2013
Percent Contained: 60%
Wiland Fire Modules: 2
Total Perspnnel: 140
Location: 8 miles east of Riggins, and 3 miles south of the main Salmon River. The fire is on BLM lands under the fire protection of the Payette National Forest.
Current Situation: The fire is burning in steep terrain on the Salmon River breaks. Firefighting personnel are going direct to contain the fire and are focused on the north side of the fire. Firefighters are being aided by consistent water drops to the fire from helicopter bucket and nozzle delivery. Fire suppression activities yesterday kept the fire in check with only minimal growth as it crept and smoldered.
A red flag warning is in effect today through noon on Friday for forecasted lightning and outflow winds up to 40 miles per hour.
The general public, rafters, and jet-boaters should be advised of the Howard Fire and ongoing fire suppression activities in the vicinity of the Salmon River and main Salmon River road. Helicopters are flying low and filling buckets and nozzles out of the Salmon River at Elkhorn Creek. And there is increased traffic due to fire suppression activities and hauling of supplies along the main Salmon River road from where it leaves the highway through to Howard Ranch. Stage 1 fire restrictions remain in effect.
