Incident: The Rock Creek Fire started on August 20, 2013, at 2:30 p.m. of unknown origin and is under investigation.
Location: 5 miles southwest of Red Lodge, MT along U.S. Highway 212.
Agency Jurisdiction: USDA Forest Service, Custer and Gallatin National Forest
Cooperating Agencies: Red Lodge Fire Rescue, Carbon County Sheriff’s Office, Carbon County DES.
Incident Management: Management of the Rock Creek Fire will transition from Shawn Pearson’s Type II Northern Rockies Incident Management Team to a local Type III Team on Tuesday morning, September 3, at 6:00 a.m.

Status: The fire is burning in sage and timber in steep terrain. The fire is located 5 miles southwest of Red Lodge. The Beartooth Highway (U.S. Hwy 212) is open between Red Lodge and the Northeast Entrance to Yellowstone National Park, which includes access to Cooke City and Silver Gate. The community of Red Lodge is open for business and campgrounds in the local area remain open.
Yesterday’s Activities: Yesterday’s weather was warmer and drier with temperatures in the high 70s and relative humidity in the 20% range. Crews continued to patrol for hot spots within the fire perimeter and to rehabilitate fireline and helispots established during the incident. Rehabilitation of the contingency dozer/handline in the West Fork Rock Creek was completed.
Current Resources: One 20-person crew and one helicopter. Total personnel: 95.
Today’s Activities: The weather today will be similar to yesterday. A crew will continue to patrol for hot spots within the fire perimeter and to rehabilitate fireline and helispots. A community meeting will be held tonight at 6:00 p.m. at the Carbon County Fairgrounds. Shawn Pearson’s Type II Incident Management Team will transfer command of the fire to a local Type III Team on Tuesday morning, September 3, at 6:00 a.m. This will be the last Fact Sheet for the Rock Creek Fire. Restrictions/Closures: A Custer National Forest area closure is in effect and includes closure of Silver Run Trail #102, Ingles Creek Trail #35, Beartrack Trail #8, and Silver Run Plateau Trail #60. The temporary flight restriction (TFR) is no longer in effect surrounding the Rock Creek Fire area. Stage 1 fire restrictions are in place for the Beartooth Ranger District, except for the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness. Stage 2 fire restrictions are in place for Carbon County.
