Shirley Complex Update - August 22, 2013
Incident: Shirley Complex Wildfire
Current Situation: Full containment of the Shirley and Tenant fires is expected at 12:00 today. The Shirley Complex also includes 6 small initial attack (IA) fires, 2 of which are being fully suppressed and 4 which are within natural barriers and are being monitored. The overall complex is 895 acres and 78% contained. As of 8:00 a.m. today the Kern River Ranger District will resume responsibility for initial attack.
Firefighters are beginning to mop up the portions of the perimeter which have been contained. Helicopters are assisting handcrews with water drops as needed. Fire growth is not expected, however interior burning will continue and smoke from the fires will continue to be visible. Planning for a transition to a type 3 organization has begun. Some resources will be demobilized or reassigned to other fires as operations change from suppression to mop up.
Firefighters and the public are urged to drive carefully due to the amount of fire equipment on the steep and winding roads in the vicinity of the fires.
Local residents and citizens are reminded to use all equipment and vehicles safely in or near wildland areas and to ensure proper maintenance as these are potentially new ignition sources. One less spark equals one less wildfire. For more information on One Less Spark, One Less Wildfire: www.preventwildfire.ca.org
Evacuations: The voluntary evacuation of the Shirley meadows area has been lifted.
Closures: Hwy 178 remains closed due to rock slides through Kern Canyon. Fire closures include Rancheria Road from the intersection with Pettitt Road for 9.2 miles to the northeast; Alder Creek Road and Campground; Evans Flat Camp; and Oak Flat Lookout. For more information on Hwy 178 and other road closures outside the forest, contact Caltrans Highway Information at 1-800-427-7623.
Open: The majority of the world class recreational opportunities in the Kern River Ranger District and vicinity are unaffected by the fire activity and remain open. Contact the Sequoia National Forest for visitor information and trip planning, 559-784-1500.
