Big Windy Complex Fire Update, August 27, 2013
Incident: Big Windy Complex Wildfire
Big Windy Complex Fire Update, August 27, 2013:
Yesterday’s Fire Operations: The fire received rain on Sunday, moderating fire activity and allowing crews to re-evaluate their strategy. Crews scouted and built fireline directly on the fire edge east of the Missouri Creek area. The south half of the fire is being monitored and patrolled. In Galice no structures are in immediate danger from the fire, but if it becomes more active firefighters are ready to reengage.
Today’s Fire Operations: Greg Chandler, Operations Section Chief, said that without the recent rain, a 16-mile burnout would have been needed to safely work near the more active fire. “The rain two days ago gave us the opportunity to go direct using roads, Missouri Creek, and handline, resulting in a smaller, 2-mile burnout to secure the perimeter,” said Chandler. Firefighters will reinforce new containment lines by brushing old roadbeds and building handlines. Burnout operations could occur later in the week, when fuels are drier.
Weather: It is expected to be mostly clear today with high temperatures from 81 to 86 degrees in the valleys and 72 to 77 on the ridges. After today the forecast calls for slightly warmer weather with gradual drying throughout the week.
NOTE: A Community Meeting will be held at the Galice Community Hall on Wednesday, August 28, at 3 pm. Incident Management Team members will provide a fire update and discuss plans for fire suppression.
Evacuations: A Level 2 evacuation is in place north of the Rogue River and south of the Marial Byway. A Level 1 evacuation is in effect in the Galice area and west. Residents should be prepared to leave if asked.
