Big Windy Fire Update August 25, 2013
Incident: Big Windy Complex Wildfire
BIG WINDY COMPLEX FIRE INFORMATION 541-476-1252
Yesterday’s Fire Operations: Fuels dried out to the point that burnout operations reconvened on the southwest and west flanks of the Big Windy Fire on Saturday continuing into the night until it became too humid to burn effectively. Fire behavior on the east flank has moderated and the Wolf Creek hotshot crew rafted down the Rogue River to the mouth of Howard Creek to explore opportunities to establish a fireline up the drainage adjacent to the fire and tie it in to existing line.
Today’s Fire Operations: The Southern Area Red Team, Tony Wilder Incident Commander, assumed management of the fire at 6 a.m. this morning. Firefighters will continue to patrol and mop-up the east and south flanks of the fire. Firing operations down the western flank of the fire are on hold due to precipitation over the fire area this morning. “Fire behavior will be minimal today”, Fire Behavior Analyst Mark Clere said at this morning’s operations briefing, “but that doesn’t mean this fire is going away anytime soon.” Scouting for potential firelines will continue in the Howard Creek drainage.
Weather: Showers with a chance of thunderstorms is expected to continue to over the fire area into the afternoon. A Red Flag Warning is in effect until 5 p.m. for thunderstorms with abundant lightning with the threat expected to diminish as the front moves to the northeast. The coming week is expected to be dry and seasonably warm.
