News & Highlights for the Big Windy Complex:
-The BLM portion of the Wild Section of the Rogue River is closed from Graves Creek to Mule Creek effective July 31 at 12:01 a.m. due to extreme fire conditions and public health and safety issues
-The Medford District of the Bureau of Land Management has given official notice that the Rogue River Trail from Grave Creek to the Rogue River Ranch is temporarily closed. All entry is restricted in order to protect the public during fire suppression operations.
-Watercraft will be launched from the Graves Creek put-in to deliver supplies to crews working to provide structure protection for Black Bar Lodge, Zane Grey Cabin and the Rogue River Ranch. As visibility allows, helicopters will assist with the transfer of supplies from ground transport to the boats at Graves Creek.
Big Windy Operations Summary:
Today, hand crews and equipment will be working:
-South of the Big Windy Fire to create fire line along the Bear Camp Road
-East of the Big Windy Fire to start opening up dozer lines and roads
-West of the Jenny Fire to build line along the ridge and down to the river
Crews will continue with structure protection efforts at Zane Grey cabin and Black Bar Lodge and will continue to scout for fire line locations.
Air operations: A light and medium helicopter are currently assigned to the Big Windy Complex, with the possibility of receiving additional air support from the Labrador Fire. Numerous emergency response landing zones are available along the river have been identified.
Two line medics and six EMT’s are stationed in various locations throughout the fire area for quick response.
Closures in Place:
-The Bear Camp Road is officially closed with closure orders and maps issued by the Medford District of the Bureau of Land Management/Grants Pass Interagency Office and the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest/Gold Beach Ranger District. See websites above for additional information. The Josephine County Sheriff’s Office and the Curry County Sheriff’s Office are providing staffing at the closure points and signs are in place.
-Rogue River Trail from Grave Creek to Rogue River Ranch
Big Windy Complex: Consists of the Big Windy (Josephine County), Calvert Peak and Jenny Fires (Curry County). Located on Medford District Bureau of Land Management lands protected by the Oregon Department of Forestry Started: July 26, 2013 at 3:00 a.m. Cause: Lightning Location: Approximately 8 miles NW of Galice. The north part of the fire is within two miles of Winkel Bar on the Rogue River.
VALUES AT RISK: Boaters and campers on the Rogue River, Wild and Scenic River below Graves Creek, economic considerations associated with recreation, Black Bar Lodge (18 structures), Zane Grey Historical Cabin (9 structures), Rogue River Ranch, cultural resources, threatened & endangered species habitat, late successional reserves, fisheries and wildlife.
SAFETY CONCERNS: Steep and unforgiving terrain, mixing of fire and public traffic, particularly on one-lane roads, variable and unpredictable winds in the river corridor, inactive and active mine shafts, ticks, hazard trees, poison oak, poor air quality, aviation operations, extreme fire behavior.
WEATHER: A red flag warning is in effect until 2 pm on Wednesday. There is a slight chance for lightning over the fire area from 9 am to 2 pm today. Mostly cloudy with isolated dry thunderstorms. Temperatures 64-67 and Rh 36-40%. Winds light becoming NW 2-4 mph afternoon.
FIRE BEHAVIOR: Expect another smoky day with an inversion over the fire area. This will moderate fire behavior, with some occasional flare ups in thicker fuels.
