Infrared imagery from a flight over the Whiskey Fire on Saturday night revealed substantially less heat than earlier fights. Mop up crews are focusing their attention along the eastern flank and in the Southeast corner of the fire within the headwaters of Beaver Creek where the imagery indicated the most concentrations of heat. The headwaters of Beaver Creek continue to be the most challenging with very steep ground and many unburned areas that continue to smolder. Activities on the Whiskey Complex Fires are slowly shifting into high gear on Fire Suppression Repair work the first of three phases of rehabilitation efforts to be accomplished over the next few weeks and months. A large chipper arrived Sunday and joined a small chipper and 3 excavators along with a grader who are working on Fire Suppression Repair.
The three phases of rehabilitation efforts following wildfires on federal lands are; Fire Suppression Repair; Burned Area Emergency Response; and Long-term Recovery. To gain a better understanding of what will be happening over the next few weeks and well into the fall and even next year a brief explanation of each phase will be issued over the next days. This is the second installment on rehabilitation efforts and todays focus is on Burn Area Emergency Response.
The Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) program is a rapid assessment of burned watersheds by teams of resource specialists to identify unacceptable post-fire threats and implement emergency treatments to reduce the risks before the first major storm or damaging event. The fire results in a loss of vegetation exposure of the soil to erosion and increased water runoff that may lead to flooding and increased sediment and debris flows. BAER treatments such as the installation of erosion and runoff water control devices; temporary barriers to protect recovering areas; warning signs; and drainage features for increased flow may be implemented. BAER work may also replace safety related facilities; remove safety hazards; prevent permanent loss of habitat for threatened and endangered species; and prevent the spread of noxious weeds. The Whiskey Complex BAER Team has been in place and working to finalize and approve a plan.
